Reflections on Online Collaborative Writing in ICT Class❤️

In this week‘s ICT class, we engaged in an online collaborative writing activity that allowed us to explore different digital tools for teamwork. The process was structured into multiple stages, from brainstorming to drafting and editing, with clearly defined roles for each participant. Here, I’ll share my reflections on the experience, the benefits and challenges of collaborative writing, and its potential application in my future teaching.

The Collaborative Writing Process

Our task began with forming small groups (three to four members), where we sat together and selected an online collaboration tool for brainstorming. Each group member took on a specific role:

Encourager and brainstormer – facilitated idea generation.

First drafter – wrote the initial draft.

Editor and spell checker – refined language and corrected errors.

Fact checker – ensured accuracy and credibility of information.

After brainstorming, we temporarily moved to different tables based on our roles, only communicating with our original group members online. This setup simulated a remote collaboration scenario where team members must rely on digital tools to coordinate their work.

We then chose a topic from three options and used the online tool to draft an essay plan and an introductory paragraph. Finally, we returned to our original groups to discuss our experiences and evaluate the effectiveness of online collaborative writing.

Key Takeaways from the Experience

Benefits of Online Collaborative Writing

Enhanced Teamwork and Role-Specific Contributions

Assigning specific roles encouraged accountability and ensured that all aspects of the writing process were covered. Each team member contributed their expertise, making the writing process more structured and efficient.

Improved Idea Generation and Organization

Using an online brainstorming tool allowed us to generate and organize ideas visually before drafting. This made it easier to develop a coherent structure for our essay.

Exposure to Digital Collaboration Tools

The activity provided hands-on experience with digital tools that facilitate remote collaboration—an essential skill in both academic and professional settings.

Immediate Peer Feedback

Since different members focused on specific tasks (e.g., editing and fact-checking), we received immediate feedback on writing quality, clarity, and accuracy, leading to a more polished final product.

Challenges and Areas for Improvement

Communication Barriers in Role-Based Separation

While working within our designated roles, we relied solely on online communication with our original group. This sometimes led to misalignment in expectations, as we could not have real-time verbal discussions to clarify ideas.

Technical Issues

Some students faced difficulties navigating the collaboration tool, which slowed down the process. Ensuring that all participants are familiar with the digital platform beforehand could improve efficiency.

Balancing Different Writing Styles

Since multiple people contributed to the same document, maintaining a consistent writing style required extra effort during the editing phase.

Would I Use This in My Future Teaching?

Yes, I would definitely consider using online collaborative writing in my future ESL teaching, especially for IELTS preparation. Here’s why:

Encourages Active Participation – Students take responsibility for different aspects of writing, making the process more interactive.

Develops Digital Literacy – Helps students become comfortable with online collaboration, a crucial skill in modern workplaces.

Enhances Peer Learning – Students learn from each other’s strengths and receive constructive feedback.

Simulates Real-World Writing – Many professional writing tasks involve collaboration, and this exercise prepares students for such scenarios.

However, I would make some modifications:

Provide a brief tutorial on the digital tool before starting.

Allow some in-person discussions alongside online collaboration for clarity.

Emphasize maintaining a consistent tone technical navigation.
