Exploring Speaking Skills with Chatbots and Virtual Reality in future English teaching🇬🇧
This week in my ICT course, we explored the intersection of Speaking Skills, Chatbots, and Virtual Reality (VR) in language teaching. The highlight of the session was experiencing VR technology in action, which provided a hands-on understanding of its potential in TESOL classrooms.
VR and Chatbots: Transforming Speaking Practice
Both VR and AI-driven chatbots offer innovative ways to engage students in authentic, immersive language learning experiences. VR can simulate real-life scenarios, allowing learners to practice English in a controlled yet realistic environment—whether it’s ordering food in a restaurant or navigating an airport. Meanwhile, chatbots can serve as interactive speaking partners, offering instant feedback, unlimited practice opportunities, and reduced anxiety for learners who may feel self-conscious speaking in front of others.
Reflection: The Role of Technology in Language Learning
As a TESOL student and future IELTS instructor, I see immense potential in these tools, but also some challenges. While VR fosters experiential learning, it requires access to expensive equipment and technical support. Similarly, chatbots—though helpful for repetitive speaking drills and pronunciation practice—may lack the depth of human interaction needed for advanced learners.
Nevertheless, these technologies can be powerful supplementary tools when combined with traditional communicative approaches like CLT and TBLT. They can enhance engagement, personalize learning, and break classroom limitations. Going forward, I want to explore practical ways to integrate these tools into IELTS speaking training, making test preparation more dynamic and interactive.
