This Week’s Learning Reflection: Using Voki, Quizlet, and Kahoot in English Teaching


This week in my TESOL studies, I explored several interesting educational tools: Voki, Quizlet, and Kahoot. These platforms can make English lessons more interactive and are especially useful for increasing students’ motivation. However, while using them, I also noticed some drawbacks. Here, I’d like to share my thoughts and reflections



How Do These Tools Help Students Learn?


Voki – This tool allows users to create animated avatars that can “speak.” Teachers can use it to record dialogues or stories, and students can create their own characters to practice speaking. For shy students, this method reduces the pressure of speaking and makes them more willing to express themselves.


Quizlet – A fantastic vocabulary learning tool! Its flashcard feature helps students memorize words, while the test mode allows them to check their progress. I think this is particularly useful for students who need to learn a large number of vocabulary words.


Kahoot – A game-based learning platform that allows teachers to create quizzes where students compete to answer questions. It makes the classroom environment more dynamic and engaging, significantly increasing student participation.


Drawbacks and Limitations of These Tools


Voki’s Drawbacks – While engaging, creating avatars can be somewhat complicated. For younger students or teachers unfamiliar with technology, it may take extra time to learn and adapt.


Quizlet’s Drawbacks – Although it helps with memorization, it mostly promotes rote learning. If students don’t practice words in context, they may struggle to use them effectively in real-life situations.


Kahoot’s Drawbacks – The competitive aspect is fun, but sometimes students become too focused on winning rather than truly learning. Additionally, if the internet connection is unstable, it can affect the user experience.


Reflections on Enhancing Student Motivation


Through this week’s learning, I gained a deeper understanding of how technology can support English teaching. Tools like Voki, Quizlet, and Kahoot provide a more immersive and interactive learning experience, which is especially beneficial for students who are easily distracted or lack interest.


However, I believe that technology should not completely replace traditional teaching. If we rely solely on these tools without aligning them with teaching objectives and classroom interactions, students might focus more on the game or test format rather than deep language learning. The best approach is to use these tools as supplementary resources, integrating them with classroom discussions, task-based learning, and other methods to truly enhance students’ language abilities.
